About this Podcast

HOST: Welcome to the podcast, everyone! Today I'm excited to be talking with Dr. Elizabeth Johnson, an expert in music education and inclusivity. Dr. Johnson, can you tell us a bit about your experiences in this field? GUEST: Absolutely! I've spent over 20 years working as a music educator, and during that time, I've seen firsthand how important it is to create an inclusive environment in choirs and classrooms. HOST: That's wonderful. And what would you say are some current industry trends when it comes to inclusive choir leadership? GUEST: Well, there's a growing recognition that inclusivity benefits everyone, not just those who are often marginalized. This means we're seeing more resources and training for conductors to create truly inclusive spaces, which is fantastic! HOST: I can imagine that might also present some challenges. What are some difficulties you've faced or observed when implementing inclusive choir leadership? GUEST: One challenge is addressing the unconscious biases we all have. It takes conscious effort and continuous learning to ensure we' truly welcoming everyone. Time constraints and limited resources can also hinder inclusive practices. HOST: I agree, and it's great that we have courses like the 'Graduate Certificate in Inclusive Choir Leadership' to help address these challenges. Looking to the future, what do you hope to see in terms of inclusive choir leadership? GUEST: I hope to see more opportunities for ongoing professional development in this area, allowing conductors to stay updated on best practices and new research. I also foresee a future where inclusive choir leadership is the norm, not the exception. HOST: Dr. Johnson, thank you so much for joining us today and sharing your insights! GUEST: My pleasure! It's always a joy to discuss the importance of inclusive choir leadership and the positive impact it can have on our singers and communities. (Note: The guest's responses are kept brief and focused as requested, while still providing real-world perspectives and insights.)
