About this Podcast

HOST: Welcome to our podcast, today I'm thrilled to be speaking with Dr. Jane Smith, an expert in LGBTQ+ literature and the instructor for our new course, "Advanced Certificate in LGBTQ+ Inclusive Literature Studies." Dr. Smith, can you tell us what inspired you to create this course? GUEST: Absolutely, I've noticed a growing interest in LGBTQ+ literature, and there's a demand for a more in-depth understanding of queer theory, gender studies, and critical race theory within literary contexts. I wanted to create a course that would help educators, librarians, and literary enthusiasts explore these topics further. HOST: That's fantastic. How do you see this course contributing to a more inclusive literary landscape? GUEST: This course encourages students to analyze canonical and contemporary texts, exploring themes of sexuality, identity, and social justice. By doing so, they can develop inclusive pedagogical practices and critical analysis skills, which they can then apply in their classrooms, libraries, and personal lives, thereby contributing to a more inclusive literary community. HOST: I understand that addressing LGBTQ+ representation in literature can be challenging. Can you share any insights on how to approach these discussions? GUEST: It's essential to create a safe and welcoming environment where students feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and experiences. We also need to be mindful of the language we use and acknowledge that there's no one-size-fits-all approach to discussing LGBTQ+ representation. Encouraging open-mindedness, empathy, and ongoing learning can help navigate these conversations. HOST: That's a great point. How do you see the field of LGBTQ+ literature evolving in the future? GUEST: I believe we'll continue to see a broader range of diverse voices and stories being shared, which will enrich our understanding of the LGBTQ+ experience. Additionally, I hope to see more emphasis on intersectionality, addressing the interconnected nature of various forms of discrimination and how they impact LGBTQ+ individuals. HOST: Dr. Smith, thank you so much for joining us today and giving us a sneak peek into the "Advanced Certificate in LGBTQ+ Inclusive Literature Studies." We're excited to see how this course will expand our understanding of LGBTQ+ literature and contribute to a more inclusive literary landscape. GUEST: Thank you for having me. I'm looking forward to seeing how this course can make a difference in the literary world.
