About this Podcast
HOST: Welcome to our podcast, today I'm thrilled to be joined by Dr. Jane Robinson, an expert in Robotics and AI for Space. She's here to talk about her new course, the Professional Certificate in Advanced Robotics and AI for Space. Welcome, Jane! GUEST: Thanks for having me! I'm excited to be here. HOST: So, Jane, let's start with your personal experiences. How did you become involved in this fascinating field? GUEST: I've always been passionate about space exploration. During my Ph.D., I focused on autonomous navigation for planetary rovers, which led me to work on several NASA projects. HOST: That's amazing! Now, what current industry trends do you think learners should be aware of when it comes to robotics and AI in space? GUEST: There's a growing interest in satellite servicing, where robotic systems extend the lifespan of satellites. It's a cost-effective solution and has great potential. HOST: Indeed, it's an innovative approach. Now, teaching advanced topics like planetary rovers and satellite servicing must have its challenges. Could you share some of those? GUEST: Absolutely. One challenge is making complex algorithms accessible to students without a strong background in AI or Robotics. We use hands-on projects to help them grasp these concepts. HOST: That's a great way to learn. Now, looking to the future, where do you see the field of robotics and AI in space heading? GUEST: In the next decade, I believe we'll see more autonomous systems exploring other planets and moons, and robots could even help establish a lunar base. HOST: That sounds like an exciting future! Thank you, Jane, for sharing your insights and experiences with us today. It's been a pleasure talking to you. GUEST: Thank you! It was great being here and discussing this exciting field.
